Watch a free movie right here on the Anchorage Observer. Tonight we are featuring a film released in 1947, Spoilers of the North, by Richard Sale.
Arrogant Alaskan fishery tycoon Matt Garraway has been exploiting the commercial helplessness of the local Indian tribes as well as abusing the devotion of his younger brother Bill and the love of an alluring half-breed named Jane Koster. During a promotional trip to a fish products company in Seattle, Washington, Matt meets the beautiful executive secretary of the company, Laura Reed. Using his charm, Matt persuades Laura to help him obtain a large cash advance against a delivery of salmon which is far beyond his capabilities to deliver. Laura is so taken by Matt that she promises to come to Alaska to marry him at some point in the future. After Matt returns to Alaska, he finds that Bill has become sullen and angry. Bill complains about Matt's refusal to grant him a badly needed rest and a fair share of the profits. Matt, who needs Bill to keep the cannery workers in line for the upcoming push to deliver the salmon, pretends that a minor injury to his ribs is actually much worse so that Bill will feel obliged to stay and work hard. Bill postpones his long-awaited vacation, but then becomes suspicious about Matt's injury and rebels again. Matt wires Laura saying that he is seriously ill and needs to see her. When Laura arrives, Jane tries to keep Matt interested in her by helping him with an illegal scheme to use the Indians' special fishing privileges to deliver the salmon that he has promised. Jane's boyfriend, Joe, however, intrudes on Matt's night fishing scheme, so Jane kills him. The murder precipitates a police investigation, but Matt decides to attempt a bold move: a large night catch of salmon right under the noses of the U.S. Fisheries police patrol. Jane, who has realized that Matt has rejected her for Laura, kills him with a salmon harpoon. Later, Jane is sent to prison for the murders, and after Bill marries Laura and takes over the cannery, the couple runs it with fairness and honesty.
